Court-mandated visit to Broadview Detention Center, allowing for faith leaders to visit with detainees, pray, and distribute ashes as faith leaders negotiate with the Department of Homeland Security for pastoral access.
Background: Over ten years ago, Fr Brendan Curran, Fr Don Nevins, Fr Larry Dowling, Fr Ed Shea, Sr Pat Murphy, Sr Joanne Persch, Elena Segura, Rev Sandra Castillo, and other faith leaders negotiated permission to weekly visit detainees at the Broadview Detention Center and boarded the buses that left for O’Hare Airport to offer prayer to the group of detainees heading for their deportation flight from the country. Just now, after both Democratic and Republican leadership have blocked access, finally, a judge mandated permission for a pastoral visit at Broadview Detention Center on Ash Wednesday 2026.
